Helen Cranfield. Snowball Farm's Yard Manager

We are super-proud to share with you that Snowball Farm’s Yard Manager, Helen Cranfield, has won this year’s Golden Spur Award.

The Association of British Riding Schools Riding instructor of the year award was given in recognition of her outstanding work at Snowball Farm Equestrian Centre.

This year’s entries were whittled down from hundreds of entrants from across the country. Amongst various examinations, Helen had to teach a lesson in front of a panel of judges from the Association of British Riding Schools (ABRS), and emerged victorious from the final shortlist of six.

Helen started riding when she was 11 at a local riding school similar to Snowball Farm. There she became a weekend helper and then had her own horse from the age of 13. She went to university at Berkshire College of Agriculture and completed a BA (hons) in Equine Sport Science – alongside this she completed her BHS AI and Stage 4 Care and Riding. She also recently completed her Intermediate Teaching Teach and now a BHSII.

These days, she competes mainly in Horse Trials teams for South Oxfordshire Riding Club and has been doing some eventing this year.

Helen’s role as Yard Manager is very broad.  As well as teaching, Helen is closely involved with the day-to-day care of 85 horses including riding school horses and ponies.  As well as livery management, staff rota’s, lesson allocations, feeding, shoeing and veterinary care of the horses alongside Natalie.  She also runs the ‘Own a Pony Days’, Childrens’ Camps and fundraising events at Snowball Farm.

Helen goes off to the Association of British Riding Schools Annual Dinner on 9th October to collect the award with Sheila and Natalie Western-Kaye (we’ll share pics of the big night!).

Nice work Helen.

From Team Snowball.
